Statistics from the United States Department of Labor show that police officers live with a higher risk of sustaining a work-related injury or fatal incident than people in almost any other profession.
In the period from 2003 to 2014, an average of 115 law enforcement officers nationwide were killed in the line of duty. In 2014, homicide was the cause of 45 percent of all fatal on-the-job injuries sustained by police officers, in contrast with only 8 percent for all other lines of work. Moreover, on average, more than 30,000 officers incurred non-fatal, incapacitating injuries on the job annually from 2009 to 2014.
The Eagle and Badge Foundation’s outreach to injured officers, and to the families of those killed in the line of duty, has resulted in the provision of much-needed financial assistance. This support has eased the burden of medical costs and funded educational opportunities for officers and families. All contributions to the organization go toward such direct financial aid.
