The shift to mobile devices has dominated the better part of this decade. Today, more than half of all Internet traffic comes from mobile devices. To marketers and online merchants, this spells tremendous opportunity to market and sell online to a mobile-savvy market. However, as the data shows, consumers are still cautious about buying through their smart phones.
According to a 2015 Business Insider Intelligence report, in the second quarter of that year, 59 percent of adult Internet traffic came from mobile. However, 85 percent of all retail sales were made on desktop computers.
There were several reasons for this gap. One of them was security. Many consumers felt more secure purchasing on desktops than on mobile devices.
However, technology is making mobile transactions more secure, and consumers are responding. According to research by Wolfgang Digital, in the last half of 2016, retail revenues from mobile devices reached 38 percent against desktop’s 62 percent. Going forward, companies integrating secure online payment solutions into their business models will benefit from mobile commerce.
